Vulnerable Road User Accident Injury Claim Experts
Vulnerable Road Users is a term used to define road users who are at a greater danger of accidents, and vulnerable to more severe injuries when involved in road traffic accidents.
A Highway Code change in 2022 has been introduced. This new part of the law is aimed at protecting vulnerable road users by increasing the responsibility for road users who drive vehicles with a higher potential of causing injuries on the road.
The new rules effectively change the way liability is established for accidents involving vulnerable users, and how the process regarding claiming compensation works.
As with any new piece of legislation, it can be complex to fully understand what your rights are when making a compensation claim. Considering how serious the injuries sustained as a vulnerable road user can be, it’s vital you seek an experienced team of solicitors to support you.
Our specialist Vulnerable Road Users Accident Solicitors are always available to guide you through the process, and provide expert legal advice.
Vulnerable Road Users are those who have less protection from accidents and injury while on the road compared to a car or a similar vehicle. The law includes a number of categories, aiming to reduce the frequency and severity of events such as:
The Highway Code makes particular mention of children, older adults, disabled people, and inexperienced road users. Being part of these categories puts users at an even greater risk of accidents and injuries.
Being involved in a road traffic accident as any of the categories can be devastating. The lack of protection compared to vehicles such as cars and vans means these accidents often involve very serious injuries.

The Highway Code requires that all road users retain a high standard of care and skill to ensure everyone’s road safety, but the update it received in 2022 changes the rules governing Vulnerable Road Users. The changes which took effect on the 29th of January of 2022 outline a hierarchy of all types of road users. The position of each is decided on their level of vulnerability to accidents and injuries on the road.
Drivers of motor vehicles that pose a greater danger to others carry more responsibility, and effectively, an enhanced duty of care towards other users. The more vulnerable a road user is deemed, the higher up the hierarchy they are placed. At the low end of it, the more protected and harmful users are placed - vehicles such as cars, large passenger vehicles, vans, and minibuses.
This has been enforced to ensure these drivers pay more attention and are more careful towards Vulnerable Road Users.
This does not mean that all Vulnerable Road Users share the same place in the new hierarchy. Since 2022, the following guidelines are part of the law:
If you believe you have been injured in an accident as a Vulnerable Road User because a driver has ignored the guidelines put in place to protect you from harm, you may be entitled to make a compensation claim. Contact our expert Vulnerable Road Users Accident Solicitors today to assess your case.
Vulnerable Road Users can suffer a variety of injuries when involved in a road traffic accident. Because of the lack of protection from impact, it is much more likely to suffer an injury for this group than for drivers of larger, heavier, and more protective vehicles. All road users should take precautions while on the road - such as using protective equipment - but unfortunately, it is common to see injuries such as:
These very serious injuries can create huge amounts of distress for the victims and their families. While compensation may never make up for the pain and suffering victims go through, it is important to recover your expenses, such as medical, travel, loss of earnings, and many more costs you may encounter while injured. PSR Solicitors can ensure you receive the compensation you deserve for your injuries and inconvenience caused by the accident. Contact us today for a consultation.
Many types of accidents can cause injuries to Vulnerable Road Users. Unfortunately, even when taking all precautions and exercising skill and care on the roads, someone else’s negligent or dangerous behaviour can still cause an accident. As a Vulnerable Road User, you will be more likely to suffer serious injuries. Typical accidents that involve serious injuries include:
Our specialist Vulnerable Road User Accident Solicitors have experience supporting pedestrians, horse riders, cyclists and motorcyclists when claiming compensation for an accident on the road. Common accidents that cause road users to be injured include:
Any of these accidents can cause very serious injuries to Vulnerable Road Users. The claims process can seem complex and overwhelming, but with the support of an expert solicitor specialised in road traffic accident claims, you can obtain the compensation you deserve for your pain and suffering.
Being involved in a road accident is always a shocking experience. Your priority following the accident should be to ensure the wellbeing and safety of all parties - this can involve contacting the police and ambulance services. Once you have made sure of everyone’s well being and medical assistance has been requested, there are things you can do to help your future compensation claim.
A police report, together with a detailed collection of evidence taken just after the accident, can make the difference during your compensation claim, so ensure this is done diligently. If you are seriously injured in the accident, you should also keep a record of all medical reports and expenses, and changes to your work schedule and duties. All of these losses can be claimed for curing your Vulnerable Road User Accident Claims.
The claims process for injuries that occurred as a result of a road traffic accident has been amended with the Whiplash Reform Programme on the 31st of May 2021. With the introduction of the Official Injury Claim Portal, the government aimed to reduce the frequency of exaggerated injury claims, and allow claimants to seek compensation directly without the need of legal representation.
The data regarding the portal, however, shows that most claimants prefer to instruct a solicitor even when claiming through the OIC Portal.
Normally, road users are encouraged to use the online portal for claims valued up to £5,000 in general damages, but Vulnerable Road Users are exempt from this limit. These claims can only be valued up to £1,000.
Given the severity of the injuries that can be suffered from this type of accident, it is likely your claim will surpass this limit, and you will need legal representation.
An expert Vulnerable Road Users Accident Claims Solicitor will always follow a Pre-Action Protocol to seek a settlement for your compensation claim without bringing your case to a Court.
If your compensation claim cannot be made through the Official Injury Claim Portal, our team of specialist road traffic accident solicitors can support your claim, and obtain the compensation you deserve for your injuries and losses. Contact us today to assess your case, and begin your Vulnerable Road Users Accident Claim.
