Transport

The nearest mainline railway stations are located at Chirk and Ruabon, both of which are on the same line and both of which are approximately 14 miles away. These stations both offer northbound services to Holyhead via Wrexham and Chester and southbound services to Shrewsbury, continuing on to either Birmingham International via Birmingham New Street or Cardiff Central via Hereford.

There are also a number of bus services offering routes to Wrexham via Llangollen, Barmouth via Bala and to Ruthin, with through services continuing on to Denbigh.

Corwen is located on the A5, the main historic route from London to Holyhead. Although this has now been superseded by the coastal A55, the A5 still offers good access to Snowdonia and Holyhead to the west and Wrexham and Chester to the East via the A483.

Shopping and eating

Corwen has a good selection of local shops including a butcher, a pharmacist, a post office and a number of convenience and grocery type stores. The nearest major supermarket is located in Ruthin, which is about a 20-minute drive away.

For the size of the town, Corwen has a good selection of places to eat out, with eateries offering everything from fish and chips and Indian food to traditional pub food and fry-ups.

Leisure and Culture

Rug Chapel and Llangar Church are well worth a visit. There are also a number of interesting historic buildings such, as the Owain Glyndwr Hotel, the Church of Saints Mael and Sulien and Corwen Manor which was originally a workhouse. Opposite Corwen Manor, you will find the volunteer-led Corwen Museum. You can also catch a steam train in Corwen and take a nostalgic trip alongside the River Dee to Llangollen.

Located to the west of Corwen, the Rhug Estate runs an extremely popular organic food shop and restaurant and is also the venue for the annual “Cneifio Corwen Shears” lamb shearing competition which takes place at the end of July.

Nature and the Great Outdoors

With a variety of walks that take in the natural beauty of the area, Corwen achieved ‘Walkers and Welcome status’ in 2012 with the development of a popular and successful walking festival held every year at the end of August.

Corwen offers many scenic walks in the vicinity including Coed Pen y Pigyn which offers unrivalled views of the town.  If you fancy something a little more challenging, the North Berwyn Way, which climbs the wild mountains between Corwen and Llangollen, provides some equally stunning views of the surrounding landscape.
