Mansfield's history dates back to the Roman period, evidenced by the discovery of a villa and a cache of Roman silver coins. The town has been a royal hub since King William I declared Sherwood Forest a Royal Forest in 1066 and has been frequented by various kings, including Henry II and John, who built a residence there.

The Domesday Book recorded Mansfield as Mammesfeld and highlighted its importance with a market charter granted in 1227. During the Tudor and Stuart periods, Mansfield saw significant developments, such as the rebuilding of The Swan Inn in 1584 and the birth of the Quaker religion by George Fox in the 1640s.
