Stagecoach Merseyside and South Lancashire connect Chorley to Bolton, Blackburn, Leyland, Preston, Southport and Ormskirk. In summer, Stagecoach operates the X8 to Keswick. Chorley railway station, on the Manchester to Preston Line, is served by Northern, with direct routes to Bolton, Preston, Barrow, Blackpool, Manchester Piccadilly and Manchester Airport. There are also stations at Euxton, Adlington, Buckshaw Village and Croston.

History

The name 'Chorley' originates from the Anglo-Saxon words 'ċeorl' and 'lēah,' meaning 'the peasants' clearing.' While there was no known occupation in Chorley until the Middle Ages, archaeological evidence shows habitation since the Bronze Age.

A significant Roman road once ran near Chorley, connecting Wigan and Walton-le-Dale. In the mediaeval period, Chorley emerged in historical records around 1250 as part of the Croston Lordship.

The town's growth accelerated during the Industrial Revolution, becoming a crucial cotton town with numerous mills and coal mining operations. Chorley was also significant during World War II, housing the Royal Ordnance Factory in nearby Euxton.
